How to Prepare a Resume Photo
Learn how to choose clothing, a background, an expression, and a clear source photo for your resume portrait.
Keep the photo current and recognizable
A resume photo should make you easy to recognize. Use a clear image that reflects your current appearance, with clothing and a background that do not draw attention away from your face.
Match attire to the role
A jacket and shirt remain a dependable choice for conservative or client-facing roles. Clean business casual can suit creative and startup roles, but large logos, loud patterns, and distracting accessories usually weaken the result.
- Neat collar and shoulder line
- Neutral colors that do not overpower the face
- Visual tone consistent with the employer
Choose a simple background
White and light gray work across most application layouts and keep the face easy to read. If your clothing is very light, use enough contrast so the shoulders do not disappear into the background.
Use a natural expression and camera position
Place the camera close to eye level, keep your shoulders open, and use a relaxed neutral expression or small smile. Avoid high-angle selfies, hair covering the eyes, and filters that noticeably change facial structure.
Final submission checklist
Preview the image at the small size used by the application form. Compare edited results with the source portrait and reject versions that alter identity, age, or skin texture too aggressively.
- Current likeness
- Near-front pose
- Simple background
- Moderate retouching
- Correct platform file requirements
